Who We Are
The Llano circuit of the Episcopal Methodist Church South was organized on March8,1856, at Castell, Texas in the house of Charles a. Grote, a circuit rider.
There were 63 original charter members and many of those were from Art.
The first preaching service in Upper Willow Creek was held in 1856. Reverend C.A. Grote had been appointed to the Llano Valley Circuit of which Art was a part.
The services were held in homes and during warm weather under the trees, using split oak tree logs for seats. In 1858, a combination church and schoolhouse was built. It burned down in 1875. It was the first church in Mason County.
In that same year a stone building was erected on the same plot of land and was used again as a church and schoolhouse.
The construction of a new stone church building, that we use today, was begun in 1890 and completed in July 1891.It was built on 10 acres of land donated by Ernst Jordan Sr. a charter member.
The rock for the walls was hauled from the Ernst Jordan hill one mile southwest of the church.
When the original church was built, all sermons were in the German language until 1927.
